Martha Klein

Martha Sellers Klein is a senior consultant in the Partner and General Counsel Division of Mlegal Group. Martha has an outstanding track record in search and represents clients in multiple locations. Her practice includes retained searches for law firms and representing partner candidates on their career moves. She has obtained exceptional results for clients and candidates with whom she has worked. Just recently she successfully completed a retained search for a corporate partner for the London office of a U.S. law firm.

Martha stands apart from other legal recruiters in the level of knowledge and perspective she acquired working as a legal journalist in London and practicing law in New York City before joining Mlegal in 2003. She has been a leading expert in international law firm recruitment and strategy for more than fifteen years. In discussions with thousands of partners and managing partners in firms around the world, she has gained an exceptional understanding of the distinctions between law firms locally, nationally, and internationally.

As a high-profile journalist at Legalease between 1994 and 2003, Martha assisted numerous U.K. and U.S. law-firm managing partners in assessing their recruitment and strategic needs in the U.K. and Europe. From 2001 to 2003 Martha was Editor of The Legal 500, and from 1997 to 2001 she was the Editor of Legal Business magazine. Previously she published and edited The Expatriate Lawyer in London, and worked at American Lawyer Media as editor of Corporate Control Alert, a publication for lawyers and investment bankers. These experiences gave her a unique foundation for understanding how one law firm differs from another in terms of practice strengths, client base, financial stability, strategy, and culture. She can help law firms hire the best candidates for their practice needs and enable partners to find the best fit for their practice and personality.

A former corporate lawyer, Martha graduated from University of Virginia Law School in 1985. She practiced law in New York for four years, starting at Mudge Rose Guthrie Alexander & Ferdon and moving laterally in 1987 to Simpson Thacher & Bartlett in New York. As a securities and corporate/M&A associate, she worked on numerous high-profile transactions, such as Kohlberg Kravis Roberts's $25bn LBO of RJR Nabisco in the late 1980s. She lived in London from 1994 to 2003, then joined Mlegal Group in California.

Martha graduated Phi Beta Kappa from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1980, and was elected to every major honorary society. Between university and law school, she worked as a legislative aide for two years for a U.S. Senator and a U.S. Congressman on Capitol Hill.
